Lottie has always been interested in photography and wanted to try and link a photographic process with textiles. Inspired by Japanese textiles and traditional techniques; Lottie decided to make Shibori style fabric using the Cyanotype method.
The Shibori fabrics below were photographed at the Shibori Museum in Kyoto, Japan.
Cyanotype is a photographic printing process which is created by mixing two chemicals together, coated onto paper or fabric in a dark place and left to dry there due to the chemicals being light sensitive. Once exposed to the light; the fabric/ paper turns a Yellow/ Green colour (see photograph below) before turning Blue once rinsed under water.
Lottie also coated different yarns in Cyanotype so that she could weave with them; she found this interesting to see the variation of shades of blue given on each fibre. Lottie would like to experiment more with this process; but below are a few of the fibres and samples developed throughout this particular project.
